From its founding in 2003 Shunter has become the preferred maintenance-supplier to an increasing number of rail freight operators, public transport providers, railway contractors and rolling stock-leasing companies.
A team of over 100 specialised employees is available to assist you every day with substantial professional expertise and extensive experience to provide very high quality- and service-levels. Shunter maintains effective and efficient business operations, with permanent improvement of our services permanently in mind.
One of the ways in which we ensure this continuous improvement is by permanently investing in our employees’ skills. This way, we ensure that to continue to meet our customers’ needs while at the same time keeping up with economic and technological trends.
All Shunter’s workshops are situated in strategic locations, as this enables us to assist our customers as quickly as possible. In addition to the workshops based in the heart of the European freight transport hub of Rotterdam, Shunter operates around 10 fully equipped vans for quick-repair on the spot. In that way we cover the Netherlands, Belgium and North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany. Shunter also intends to introduce a new workshop at Maasvlakte harbour and industrial area in the near future. Once we have set up operations there, we will be enable our customers even further to reduce the costs by keeping the number of light locomotive movements to and from maintenance facilities.
We aim to establish a long-term, close working relationship with our customers in which we take a major responsibility off their shoulder so they can focus on their core business. We achieve this by providing services such as the maintenance and repair of locomotives and wagons, maintenance planning and scheduling, temporary lease of equipment and staff as well assistance in the event of an incident.

- Scheduled maintenance, repair and inspection of locomotives and freight wagons, in the workshop and on-site;
- Drafting and optimising maintenance concepts, analysis of incident behaviour and adapting maintenance to specific user requirements and technical features of the equipment;
- Equipment modification-projects involving rolling stock, engineering;
- Configuration- and documentation-management;
- Supply of parts and components for third parties;
- Traction equipment rental;
- Transportation of (defective/damaged) rolling stock to and from workshops.

Shunter is responsible for the maintenance and maintenance management of more than 120 operational locomotives thus performing role of Entity in Charge of Maintenance (ECM).
In addition, Shunter repairs and maintains well over 1,000 freight wagons and 400 locomotives in the workshop on a regular basis for which other companies perform the maintenance management. Most – if not all – of them can be seen operating through the best part of Europe.
